Makers of renowned light-weight track weapons, Lotus, has been making waves on the car scene with cutting-edge design and by the outing of its forth-coming 1.47MW all-electric Evija hypercar. Now though, the British firm is hinting at the return of a familiar name plate.
The Lotus Esprit is regarded by many as one of the firm’s most iconic creations. The British rival for the Porsche 911 will not be featuring a V8 assisted by two turbochargers like in the Series 4 in the upcoming car. But rather, according to a report by Autocar, the upcoming Esprit could have an electrified V6.
According to that report, the V6 mill can trace its lineage back to the Toyota-sourced sixers currently employed in its stable. Lotus is also said to have developed a new electrified system to supplement the V6, presumably using the know-how it garnered from Geely-owned sister brand, Volvo. That said, nothing is set in stone.
Under Geely ownership, the Norfolk-based maker is able to expand its line up further, including their long-mooted SUV, possibly. Aside from that, the brand is also expanding its Hethel headquarters which will give it the capacity to produce more cars per annum and expand its sales horizon to other markets.
The new Lotus sports car is supposedly due to be unveiled in the first half of 2021, with plans for it to go on sale a few months thereafter. Stay tuned.
